Lucy & Matt
From the feeling at the ceremony, the vibe on the lawn, to the wow factor once you entered the venue. It was all there. The colour, the vibe, the electricity in the air.
It was Lucy & Matt all over. And it made for one of the weddings of the year.
I honestly don’t even know where to start with these two. The whole experience, from our first cuppa in Mt Lawley to the last song of the night, was a proper vibe. Its easy to just be fixated on the fact that for me, this is work. But when I do weddings like this it reminds me of why I love what I do so much.
Its just such an epic reality that I get to provide a good time to humans like Lucy & Matt, and basically become part of the family for one night. Thats the privilege of DJing weddings and I never take it for granted. Crafting a soundtrack for the unison of two people really is something insanely rewarding.
I always try to be as present as possible and tap into the energy surrounding me, and as I look around the room just before we got things underway that evening in The Gardens at Bullimah’s new venue “Potters Well”, there was one thing in particular that stood out to me. Everybody honestly seemed proud to be there. Its kind of hard to describe, but its like everyone knew that this one, without doubt, was the real deal. Effortless & unapologetic true love in every sense.
They said their I do’s in the Sunken Garden, had cocktails & scones under the receding sun on the beautifully kept lawns of Bullimah while I played a collection of accoustic covers and indie vibes to set the mood for the evening.
Once the sunshine began its familiar transition, making way for the cool night air of the south coast, we made our way into Potters Well & The Spence’s made their grand entrance. In pairs, they entered to one of my favourite artists & songs, Vance Joy’s “Saturday Sun” - I love the way it builds into the horn section of the chorus, such a massive vibe! They didn’t disappoint either, with the newlyweds pausing mid way down the lane to lay a full-passion kiss on each other in the heat of the moment, sending the crowd into complete raptures.
It was so encompassing of the whole wedding. Two people just lost in the moment, and its was like that all day and all night.
I kind of had an idea of where I wanted to go with the pre-dinner music, but I could feel there was a real vibe to the room. Everyone was already in the mood (foot tappers everywhere) so I really went for it with my mixes to match/push that feeling early, but was totally surprised when the dance floor erupted well before dinner was even a thought. We literally had to interrupt dancing so we could do some speeches!
One particularly memorable moment from the night was the Cake Cutting. As they took their slices, Lucy - without hesitation - planted a whole handfull right into Matt’s face & all through his luscious beard. This in turn delayed the first dance by about 5 minutes solely for Matt to scrub the icing from his bristles. Totally worth it though in my opinion!
Matt then re emerged sans cake-face, took Lucy’s hand and led her to the courtyard for their First Dance as Husband and Wife. Lucy & Matt chose a song that I have been really digging lately too - “10,000 Hours” by Dan & Shay ft. Justin Bieber (I secretly love country music) - but it was this elegant, stripped back piano version that just fit so perfectly with them twirling around under the soft glow of the festoons.
So ridiculously good & such a moment in time.
As the bridge of the song arrived, I faded into “Hold My Girl” by George Ezra for the father daughter dance & Mark took his moment with Lucy, and the emotions really started flowing.
But from there on, it was party time. I moved through some modern classics and pop bangers, then into some throwback classics that never go astray at a good wedding. I recently described it like a pizza to someone who was asking about choosing wedding music - you need some spicy salami & salty olives, a fresh tomato base and some earthy mushrooms, but it wouldn’t be a pizza without a sprinkle of cheese.
Young and old went mad for a little sprinkle too, particularly some good old Bon Jovi and Queen sing alongs! Then the last hour was a mix of RnB, Hip Hop and dance bangers to see the night through, and right up until the final moments the dance floor was in full swing.
A special shout out needs to go to the amazing duo of Ben & Ebony, they were capturing all of the moments of the day and Ebony was the stylist responsible for interpreting the two lover’s vibe and created an intricate palette of brights and pastels all through the venue. They absolutely nailed it, from start to finish these two were a pleasure & it was great to see Eb let her hair down and slay some dance moves when the time was right!
I could go on and on about this one. It was such a great time, I met some beautiful people, danced way too much and was so buzzed that I couldn’t sleep that night.
But you know what?
I wouldn’t have it any other way.
